New Darlington station opening pushed to spring 2026

Construction delays have been blamed on cost pressures as the multi-million pound facility continues to take shape. 

It means the scheduled completion date of December 2025 has now been revised to spring 2026. 

“It is looking unlikely that construction can be wholly finished and the authorisation processes completed to enable the new station and platforms to open in time for the December timetable change,” a progress update read. 

Network Rail and the Tees Valley Combined Authority (TVCA) said they are working to mitigate the issues. 

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: "It’s deeply frustrating this project won’t be finished this year. We handed over the new entrance hall last year on time and on budget – and I know this new delay prolongs disruption for passengers and the people of Darlington.”

The £140 million station redevelopment includes a multi-storey car park, transport interchange and gateway entrance connected to Central Park. Two new platforms will be created on the station’s Eastern side to accommodate current and future services, to improve the frequency and reliability of trains, and provide better connectivity along the East Coast Main Line and across the region.

Despite the delays, canopy works on the new platform are ongoing, and the fit-out of the new station shell is close to completion. Work on the multi-storey car park is ongoing, with the new entrance from Neasham Road to the short stay interchange area now created. 

Buildings have been cleared to make way for an extension to the station, with the old and new sites linked by a pedestrian bridge joining the original historic station building with the new modern facility.

Mayor Houchen added: “This is a crucial project for the town and our whole region. It's going to bring two new platforms to unlock better rail services, but also provide the entrance hall, shops and modern facilities Darlington deserves. I've written to Network Rail urging them to get this and other jobs done. People deserve the station they were promised without any more delays.”
