Middlesbrough man dumped fridge freezer in alleyway

Mariwan Hamad was caught on CCTV dumping wood, MDF, plastic, and the kitchen appliance on an alley off Roman Road in Middlesbrough, near his flat, in September 2024.

He was sentenced in his absence at Teesside Magistrates Court on Tuesday (September 16).

Hamad, 38, was fined £660 and ordered to pay costs of £665.25 and a victim surcharge of £264, making a total of £1,589.25.

Magistrates also heard the case of 22-year-old Jordan Owens, who admitted littering next to a bin on Castle Way, Middlesbrough in February.

Letters in the dumped waste were found carrying his address.

Owens, of Bamburgh Court, claimed his bin had not been collected.

He was convicted in his absence under the Environmental Protection Act. He was fined £400 and ordered to pay costs of £661.50 and a victim surcharge of £160, making a total of £1,221.50.

Councillor Ian Blades, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive member for Neighbourhoods, said: “Fly-tipping and littering are lazy, antisocial and utterly unnecessary.

“These cases are a timely reminder that those who think they’re above the law or can take shortcuts are liable to end up out of pocket and with a criminal record.

“Our officers will pursue those responsible relentlessly on behalf of law-abiding members of the community.

“I’m also enormously grateful to the public whose invaluable help and support is helping us stamp out this blight on our neighbourhoods.”
