The Quarryhouse Lane crossing, in Crossgate Moor, Durham, has been deemed as "beyond economic repair" by the council after deteriorating over time.
Durham County Council said demolishing the bridge would cost less than repairing it, saying it has low usage and there is a traffic-lit crossing nearby.
Plans have been submitted to remove the bridge in October.
If approved, it will be lifted out by a crane with overnight closures on the A167 between 8pm and 6pm over five nights from October 27 to until October 31.
A decision to approve the demolition could be made in the coming weeks.
