Kynren brought down the curtain on its 2025 season on Saturday night with a standing ovation for the 1,000 volunteers who make the epic outdoor production possible.

The Bishop Auckland show, now in its tenth year, has enjoyed its strongest run since before the pandemic.

More than 95% of its volunteer cast and crew returned this season, and ticket sales rose by 12% compared to last year, bucking national trends in the arts and entertainment sector.

For many, the volunteers are what make Kynren unique. They cover every aspect of the production, from sword fighting and stunts to stitching costumes and welcoming audiences on site.

Head of volunteer casting and engagement, Wendy Wilshere, said the sense of community was central to the show’s success: “Our volunteers are at the core of everything we do. The show simply wouldn’t be what it is without them.”

The 2025 season also coincided with the publication of The Spirit of Kynren, the show’s first socio-economic impact report. It found that Kynren has contributed more than £65.5 million to the North East economy since 2016, while also boosting wellbeing for those involved. Almost all volunteers reported feeling happier, healthier and more confident as a result of taking part.

Chief executive Anna Warnecke said: “Kynren is not just a show; it’s a community, a source of pride for the region, and a cultural driver for the North East.”

She confirmed plans are moving ahead for Kynren – The Storied Lands, a new daytime theme park opening in 2026 alongside the night show.

This milestone year also brought new highlights on stage, including a reimagined Diamond Jubilee scene with more than 150 performers and 20 horses, and new pre-show features such as a replica Victorian railway station built to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Stockton & Darlington Railway.

Kynren’s efforts were recognised with a string of awards in 2025, including Event of the Year at the North East Tourism Awards and Team of the Year at the Cultural Enterprises Awards.

Tickets for next summer’s performances will go on sale in October at kynren.com
