A stalker who started a fire in his ex-partner’s bedroom after barricading himself in her home during a 90-minute stand-off with police has been locked up.
Idris Hussain told officers he was armed with a loaded shotgun and a knife when they arrived at his ex’s Coxhoe home after the defendant forced his way into the property.
The 33-year-old had jumped in a taxi at Bradford bus station to head to County Durham shortly after he had been released from prison.
Shaun Dryden, prosecuting, said when the defendant arrived at his ex-partner’s new home on December last year, he discovered to was empty persuaded the taxi driver to take him to a friend’s home instead.
The lawyer said Hussain left the taxi driver £290 out of pocket after he also borrowed some money to buy booze.
The court heard how the following week, Hussain returned to the address in Coxhoe, but the victim fled in her car as soon as she spotted him.
Mr Dryden said on December 22, the defendant again turned up at the woman’s home to discover that he had arranged for a locksmith to come to the property to gain access before she was again forced to flee her home and call the police.
“They couldn’t gain access to the house as he had placed glue in the lock,” he said. “Eventually entry was forced by officers and the defendant made threats towards the officers that he had a knife and a loaded shotgun.”
The police withdrew and called for tactical support and a 90-minute stand-off ensued before they forced their way into the barricaded bedroom and discovered the duvet was alight.
The court heard how the defendant had previous convictions for stalking and assaulting the same complainant in 2022 and 2023.
Hussain, of Sunbridge Road, Bradford, pleaded guilty to arson, stalking, making off without payment and two charges of causing criminal damage as a result of his behaviour in December last year.
Dominic Woolard, mitigating, said his client started the fire in the bedroom as a desperate plea for help and only intended to hurt himself.

Judge Nathan Adams sentenced Hussain to a total of 12 months in prison for all offences.
“You were going through her belongings, you were going through her computer, and you found images you believed of her cheating on you, but the relationship was quite clearly over at this point, and it was none of your business,” he said.
“When the police arrived at the property, you barricaded yourself in the property and said that you had various weapons to stop the police from coming in.”
Hussain, who was cleared of a charge of attempted robbery of the taxi driver, was made subject to a restraining order to protect his victim.
