A prisoner at HMP Durham was found hanging in his cell and died later in hospital, an inquest has heard.
Philip Lee Byers from Sunderland died at the University Hospital of North Durham after he was transported from the facility on August 15.
The 40-year-old, who was unemployed, is said to have died from a "hypoxic brain injury".
Opening his inquest at Crook Coroners' Court on Wednesday, September 10, senior coroner Jeremy Chipperfield heard details of the case.
Coroners officer Alexis Blighe told the court: "This 40-year old male was born on 07 February 1985 at Sunderland, Tyne & Wear.

"His last employment status and occupation were unemployed. He resided at HMP Durham Old Elvet, Durham, DH1 3HU.
"He died on 15 August 2025 at the University Hospital of North Durham.
"I understand the circumstances to be that Mr Byers was found hanging in his cell at HMP Durham."
Proceedings were adjourned, and the inquest will be mentioned on October 13 at 11.30am at Crook Civic Centre.
