The Gate is hoping to create a “more comfortable relaxed atmosphere" by revamping an upstairs room for punters and adding a new staircase.
The Blackwellgate venue described the space as somewhere customers "can enjoy a drink and chat with background music”.
Plans submitted to Darlington Borough Council describe how bosses want to replace “tired” windows and modernise the front, fitting Juliet balcony railings to windows and wood grain cladding.
The new stairs would be installed to allow for the change of use on the first floor, and would be located beside the downstairs entrance lobby.
Floor plans show the upstairs space would house its own bar, with access to the already existing male and female toilets.
The Gate initially applied to have bi-fold doors on the lounge, with concept art showing a new ‘Over the Gate’ sign on the outside of the building.
However, this was then altered to instead install new windows in their existing space, in a bid to reduce the ability of noise to spill out onto the street.
The most recent plans do not show the 'Over the Gate' signage.

The ground floor dance floor areas would continue to operate as normal under the plans, which are still yet to be approved by the council.
A statement in planning documents, on behalf of owner Mustafa Babat, said: “The development will be sympathetic to the character and appearance of the Conservation Area and the existing building’s design and character with low levels of proposed design details.”
If approved, the plans will mark the latest addition to the growing Imperial Quarter in town, with last year seeing the opening of The Hummingbird in the former Hoskins bar, The Cherry Tree in the former Avalon, and Zuu Bar and Eatery.
The nearby Coniscliffe Road has also this summer been partly pedestrianised with new permanent outdoor seating for the likes of Hash, Orb, Twenty Twos, and Dr Inks.
