Moorland railway and gardens charity day for firefighters

North Yorkshire fire service has been dealing with one of the most significant incidents in the region in recent years.

The wildfire on Langdale Moor was declared a major incident and spread across more than 20km of forestry and moorland over two weeks.

As it threatened isolated communities and critical national infrastructure at RAF Fylingdales, crews were operating in uniquely difficult and exhausting conditions.

Moorland Railway and Gardens, in Staintondale, is hosting a 'special charity day' on Sunday, September 7, to raise funds for the firefighters involved.

The event will take place from 2pm to 5pm and will include cream teas, cakes, miniature train rides, plant stalls, and a tombola.

(Image: Moorland railway and gardens) The railway joins a number of businesses and community groups who have stepped forward in recent weeks to provide practical help and donate essentials to keep the firefighters sustained.

Another community member set up a fundraiser in recent days to also raise money for the firefighters, and reached more than £44,000 in three days.

David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, previously sent a letter of thanks at the height of the fire.

He said that the care taken by the service has been "noted and valued" by the region.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service remains at the scene of the incident, to keep an eye on the state of the moorland.

The cause of the fire is yet to be established.
