A North East coastal gem has been named one of the UK’s top seaside destinations, earning five stars from consumer champion Which? for its food, drink, and stunning beaches.
The historic town of Tynemouth, famed for its dramatic clifftop priory and golden sands, was one of only two places nationwide to achieve top marks in both categories in Which?’s annual seaside town survey.
With its blend of natural beauty, Victorian and Georgian terraces, and thriving food scene, Tynemouth has long been popular with visitors.
The accolade now confirms its status as a must-visit destination for those seeking quality dining by the sea.
One of the town’s standout foodie highlights is Riley’s Fish Shack on King Edward’s Bay, where visitors can enjoy freshly prepared seafood while sitting on deckchairs overlooking the beach.
From traditional fish and chips to artisanal cafés, gastro pubs, and modern bistros, Tynemouth has built a reputation for offering some of the best coastal dining experiences in the country.
Which?’s survey, based on visitor ratings, praised 28 seaside towns across the UK for their food and drink offerings.

But Tynemouth stood out as one of the very few to also receive a full five-star beach rating, placing it firmly in the top tier of Britain’s coastal getaways.
Travel writer Trevor Baker, who led the research, said: “If you want to enjoy the best food and drink on the UK’s coast, Cornwall and Kent are often top of the list.
"But Tynemouth shows that the North East can more than hold its own, with beautiful beaches and outstanding dining to match.”
