William Renton, a student at Ripon Grammar School, achieved five grade 9s, four 8s, and two 7s despite balancing his studies with caring responsibilities for his younger sister, Ellie.

Ellie, who also attends Ripon Grammar, has Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 2 (SMA II), a life-limiting condition that requires regular treatment and daily support.

Mr Renton, aged 16, said: "Growing up with Ellie has shown me a side to the medical world that most don’t see.

"I’ve met so many incredible doctors and other medical professionals who have looked after my family and I in some of our most difficult times and they have inspired me to do the same for others."

She said: "I appreciate him always being there for me, whether I need a cuppa or help with homework.

"William has had to juggle his life with being almost a full-time young carer, and he does a wonderful job."

Mr Renton, from Kirkby Malzeard, plans to study chemistry, biology, maths, and music at A-level as he works towards a career in medicine.

His caring duties include preparing Ellie’s medication, assisting her at mealtimes, and helping her move throughout the day.

He also supports her during frequent hospital stays, sometimes putting his schoolwork on hold.

He said: "There are no 'rest' days, I am always one of her carers regardless of how I feel.

"I always have been and always will be and knowing this makes it easier to manage."

Outside of school, Mr Renton is a qualified Wheelchair Football Association referee.

Ellie plays in the Premiership of the national league for Middlesbrough Powerchair Football Club.

He said day trips and holidays require careful planning.

He said: "We have lots of specialist equipment at home, but when we go out we have to plan everything carefully.

"There has to be wheelchair access and special facilities for her and there is usually a lack of information, which makes planning things and therefore going out very difficult."

Despite his responsibilities, Mr Renton is also involved in music and extracurricular activities.

He plays piano, French horn, and guitar, and has won multiple awards at the Harrogate Music Festival.

He performs in the school’s brass and guitar ensembles, as well as the wind band.

He is also working towards his gold Duke of Edinburgh award and enjoys climbing, running, and archery.

As a young leader in his local Scout troop, he volunteers at weekly sessions and events and helps as a canoeing instructor with the county activity team.

He said: "My biggest highlight would definitely be attending the World Scout Jamboree in South Korea in 2023.

"This was a great opportunity to explore other cultures and meet Scouts from around the world."

Mr Renton also works part-time as a milkman six days a week before school, and occasionally helps with a pizza van and at a birds of prey centre.

He said he remains determined to achieve his dream of becoming a doctor.
