A County Durham road has been closed in both directions following an incident.

The A691, from Consett into Lanchester, has been shut by Durham Police opposite St Bede's Catholic School and Sixth Form College.

The nature of the incident is not known at this time - with the force asking people to avoid the area if travel is not necessary.

It is believed the road was closed some time around 8pm, although this has not yet been confirmed.

People can still get to and from Lanchester via Maiden Law and Howden Bank.
