Road closures on B6309 in County Durham until 2026

Motorists travelling through County Durham and Northumberland should prepare for significant travel disruption as a key section of the B6309 is set to close from September 22, as part of a major bridge repair project.

The closure is expected to last until January 11 2026.

Northumberland County Council, in collaboration with Durham Council, has issued a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order affecting multiple sections of the B6309 in the Ebchester area.

Roads Affected

• B6309 Ebchester to Newlands from its junction with B6309 (from A694 junction to the County Boundary at River Derwent) will be closed heading west.
• B6309 (from A694 junction to County Boundary at River Derwent) will be closed, covering the stretch that includes and extends beyond the old Ebchester bridge.

The works have been commissioned to allow critical bridge repairs, and no access will be maintained through the affected area during the closure period.

Diversion and Alternative Routes

A signed diversion will be in place via B6309, C273, A68, B6278, and A694, and vice versa.

The council advises that changes to these routes may be made if necessary and will be signposted accordingly.

The full diversion route spans around 16 miles and is estimated to add around 28 minutes to travel times.

Northumberland County Council has said that the closure is necessary to ensure the safety of the travelling public and to carry out essential repairs to the bridge.

The order allows the council to maintain flexibility in case further work is needed beyond the initial expected completion date in January 2026.
