Redcar homeless man who smashed Pauly's windows locked up

Daniel Charlton shouted ‘I’m going to f*** you up’ when he was confronted after attacking Pauly’s bar in Redcar with the weapon.

The 38-year-old was already on bail charged with assaulting an emergency worker when he tried to bite a police officer when he was attempting to arrest him.

Cainan Lonsdale, prosecuting, said: “He took the emergency hammer from a bus out of his rucksack and used it to smash all three windows of the pub.

“He then became confrontational and hostile with people.

“A number of comments were made ‘‘I’m going to f*** you up’ and ‘the bitch in the red braids, I’m going to kill her’ before making various threats about what he was going to do with the hammer.”

In a victim impact statement, the bar owner said he was forced to temporarily close his business while repairs were carried out.

He added: “The incident did impact me financially, emotionally and mentally. I had my windows boarded up which cost me £400, I had to buy new windows which cost me £1,500 and I had to close my business which cost thousands.

“My staff were scared to come to work and the suspect was walking up and down the road, which scared us all.

“I feared for my life and was scared of coming to work.”

Charlton, of Laburnum Road, Redcar, pleaded guilty to assaulting an emergency worker on October 18 last year and committed criminal damage and a public order offence on October 28.

Vincent Ward, mitigating, said his client was homeless at the time of the offences but had since secured a tenancy for a flat and tackled his drug addiction.

He added: “He accepts that he shouldn’t have behaved in the way he did. He is very sorry for his behaviour.

“I asked him why he had done the criminal damage, he said he was frustrated and homeless.”

Recorder Louise Cox sentenced Charlton to a total of 14 weeks on all charges.

She added: “There is no doubt that the custody threshold is passed in these offences.”
