Diggers have moved in as construction continues on a controversial new McDonald’s in Stockton.

The fast food giant first announced plans to build a new drive-thru on land north of Yarm Road’s Lidl supermarket in February last year.

But the multi-million pound investment proposals were met with backlash from residents, who raised concerns over noise, traffic, litter, and crime.

Despite 48 letters of objection, the plans were green-lit by Stockton Council later last year.

Now, new pictures have shown how construction crews have moved in on the brownfield site, which borders the car park of the supermarket just off the A66.

Several green-coloured shipping containers and vans are on site, with yellow diggers seen getting to work on Monday (July 21).

As reported, McDonald’s, which already has locations at Portrack Retail Park, Teesside Park, and Thornaby, is expected to create around 85 full-time jobs at the new drive-thru.

Opening hours for the restaurant will be from 6am to 12am and were reduced from initial 24/7 proposals following consultation with residents.

After the plans were first revealed, objectors raised issues with road safety, disruption, noise, light pollution, “awful” smells, pests and vermin, health, loss of privacy and the suggestion it would become a “magnet for anti-social behaviour”.

But Daniel Gregg, from Lichfields on behalf of McDonald’s, said it would bring “significant benefits” to the area, as reported by the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

An opening date for the venue is not yet known.
