Smyths Toys Superstores looks set to open its first store in Darlington.

New signs suggest the toy retailer is taking over the former Next Outlet store at Darlington Retail Park, off Yarm Road.

The out-of-town unit has been closed since Next pulled out of the complex at the end of May, after just under four years.

The shop has since been cleared of its Next branding and signs, with the windows and main entrance doors now covered over.

However, several signs taped to the windows of the site state that deliveries for a ‘Smyths Toys store’ must go around to the corner of the shop.

Smyths Toys, which is known for its selection of toys, nursery equipment and gaming gadgets, is yet to comment on the potential new location.

The nearest Smyths Toys stores for Darlington residents are currently at Portrack Lane in Stockton and at Durham’s Arnison Shopping Park.

Next first opened at Darlington Retail Park in September 2021, taking over the former home of furniture chain DFS.

It operated for several years before announcing it would be closing in April - although no reason for the decision was given at the time.

Next continues to operate in the town centre from its store at the Cornmill Shopping Centre.

The Northern Echo has contacted Smyths Toys for more information.
