Young musicians delighted audiences and raised money for their school and an African hospital at a summer variety performance.
Pupils from Wolsingham School, in Weardale, staged the school’s fifth Summer Showcase at nearby St Mary's and St Stephen's Church, featuring a wide range of musical acts.
Funds raised by the event will be split between funding care and equipment at Murambinda Mission Hospital, in Zimbabwe, and production costs for the school’s summer theatre show next year.
Nerys Angel, head of music at Wolsingham School – which is part of the Advance Learning Partnership – said: “The Summer Showcase is the result of six months of hard work. It’s a great opportunity to share the talents and hard work of the music students at Wolsingham School.
“This year, we were lucky to share these fabulous performances in our wonderful local church, which is at the heart of the Wolsingham community.
“I am so proud of our hardworking and talented students. They’ve delivered a spectacular evening.”
The programme included performances by the school orchestra, a student rock band, soloists, duets, the Wolsingham School Acting, Singing, and Performing (WASP) choir, and even a synth-pop piece by the Kazoo Club.
Among the standout performers was Year 8 multi-instrumentalist Ava Stone, who played violin in both the orchestra and rock band, performed a piano solo, sang with the choir, and is part of the Kazoo Club. She’s even planning to learn cello in time for next year’s show.
She said: “I played in the Summer Showcase last year, and it went really well, but we’ve added more acts this time, so lots of people got the chance to do their own thing, and it was just fantastic.
“We’re all very grateful to all the staff for putting this night together – especially Mrs Angel and Miss Alton. It just wouldn’t happen without them.”
