A new study has revealed that beaches around an hour's drive from County Durham have been crowned England's best for wild swimming spots.

As more travellers seek mindful escapes and nature-based experiences, wild swimming has surged in popularity, drawing in over 31,000 UK searches for “wild swimming near me” during July and August 2024 alone.

And now Northumberland holds the crown for England’s best wild swimming spots—perfectly aligning with the growing trend of “soft travel” this summer.

The research, done by travel company Bókun, analysed average water temperatures across the UK, identifying areas with temperatures between 10°C and 15°C—ideal for cold-water immersion benefits like mood boosting, reduced stress, and improved circulation.

Northumberland’s coast emerged as the top contender in England, offering inviting water temperatures that average 13.73°C, considered optimal for wellness without overwhelming first-time cold dippers.
