An “extremely dangerous” rapist who intentionally strangled a woman until she nearly lost consciousness has been jailed.
Christopher Mason raped the woman multiple times at a South Tyneside property last year, even forcing his hands around her throat on numerous occasions.
The 36-year-old, of Russell Avenue in South Shields, also verbally abused her, damaged her property, and physically assaulted her during the terrifying ordeals.
In February, after a six-day trial at Newcastle Crown Court, Mason was found guilty of ten offences, including three counts of rape, two of intentional strangulation, two of sexual assault, assault, and criminal damage.
Appearing before the same court on Thursday (June 5), he was handed a 17-year-and-three-month prison sentence. He will also serve a further four years on extended licence once he is released.
Mason will also spend the rest of his life on the Sex Offenders’ Register and was handed a lifelong restraining order to protect the victim.
Northumbria Police said: “Christopher Mason is an extremely dangerous man who has carried out vile abuse – something no person should ever have to endure.
“We'd like to firstly praise the victim for coming forward and informing police of the harrowing ordeal she has been through.
