Darlington great-grandmother to skydive to celebrate turning 92

Joan Binks, who was just 12 years old on VE Day, will complete her first ever tandem skydive on Sunday, May 18, from Shotton Airfield in Peterlee, surrounded by her devoted family of thrill-seekers and supporters.

Born and bred in Darlington, Joan has lived in the town her entire life. Despite her age, she shows no signs of slowing down.

Joan, who lives in Harrowgate Hill, raised four children who all still live in the North East.

Known for her adventurous spirit, she marked her 90th birthday by climbing Roseberry Topping for the first time.

Now fully recovered and with a clean bill of health from both her surgeon and GP, she’s ready for the next challenge.

When asked why she’s taking on the skydive, Joan’s answer is characteristically matter-of-fact: “Why not? I may not be here next year.”

Her daughter, Pauline Lax, 67, said her mother has always had a zest for life and a passion for new challenges.

“She’s in great health and brilliant mental shape for her age. We’re not sure yet if she’s the oldest to ever do it, but we’ll soon find out.”

“She took up running, swimming, driving and even martial arts after we’d all left home.

"She’s run multiple Great North Runs, the Darlington 10k, and even took up taekwondo. We’re all hoping we have her genes!”

Her husband passed away a few years ago and since then she’s been determined to live life to the fullest.

The family is due to meet at Sky High Skydiving at Shotton Airfield at 8am on Sunday for a pre-jump briefing.

Joan is expected to undergo a final blood pressure check this week to confirm she’s fully fit to fly.

Now, all eyes are on the skies- and the weather- with fingers crossed for clear conditions as one of Darlington’s most spirited residents prepares to soar.
