Two North Yorkshire councillors have been given MBEs in Rishi Sunak's resignation honours.

Yvonne Peacock, councillor for the Upper Dales at North Yorkshire Council, and former councillor Ronald Kirk have both received gongs from the former Prime Minister today.

Both have been awarded Members of the Order of the British Empire - or MBEs - for their political and public service.

Yvonne Peacock has served as a councillor on the now defunct Richmondshire District Council for more than 20 years, and was leader from 2015 until 2019.

Ms Peacock, who has lived in Bainbridge all her life, became a North Yorkshire Conservative councillor for the Upper Dales division in 2019.

She is also a member of the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority, the landlord of the Corn Mill Tearoom, and a partner in James Peacock Solid Fuel Merchant and Private Hire.

Meanwhile, Mr Kirk, who has also been given the same nod, served as a councillor for Great Ayton at Hambleton District Council between 2007 and 2023.

Today’s resignation honours saw Mr Sunak, who quit after losing the general election in July, nominate seven people to receive life peerages and 29 people to receive other honours.

Several big names on the list include former England cricketer James Anderson, who has been awarded a knighthood, and Kick-Ass filmmaker Matthew Vaughn, who was given a knighthood for his services to the creative industries.

In politics, former education and housing secretary Michael Gove was given a seat in the House of Lords, while Jeremy Hunt, the chancellor in Mr Sunak’s cabinet, and ex-foreign secretary James Cleverly were awarded knighthoods.
