A1 crash: Woman released after seven officers rushed to hospital

A two-minute-long police chase was launched on A1 at around 2.30am yesterday morning between Dunston and Swalwell in Tyne and Wear.

Officers had attempted to stop a car in the Whickham area of Gateshead due to concerns about the manner it was being driven.

(Image: NORTH NEWS AND PICTURES) The BMW then drove off but was later found in the Swalwell area, which started a pursuit.

Five police vehicles were then involved in a crash with the vehicle, and seven officers were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Four had been discharged, with two remaining for observation and one receiving treatment to a leg injury as of yesterday afternoon.

A man in his 20s was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

(Image: NORTH NEWS) Meanwhile, a woman also aged in her 20s, has been arrested on suspicion of aiding and abetting dangerous driving.

Now, the woman has been released with no further action, and the man has been released on bail.

Now, the man has been released on bail pending further enquiries in relation to causing serious injury by dangerous driving, two counts of failing to stop when required by police, no insurance, and driving otherwise than in accordance with licence.

The woman has been released with no further action in relation to the crash. However, she is on bail in relation to possession of class B drugs, and possession of class A drugs.

“We would also thank all those who attended the scene, including our colleagues from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service and the North East Ambulance Service.

“We recognise this incident has caused significant delays and thank motorists for their patience. The road closure has been necessary in order for our collision investigation team to conduct their enquiries.”
