The UK might not be the first place that springs to mind when you think of world-class beaches, but that’s exactly what makes them such hidden gems.

Among the 56 beaches named in Condé Nast Traveller’s list of the UK’s best, three standouts from North Yorkshire and Tyneside prove that you don’t need to board a plane for breath-taking coastlines, rich history, and charming seaside retreats.

Condé Nast Traveller: Three beaches listed on UK's best 56

Filey Brigg, North Yorkshire

Tucked between Scarborough and Bridlington, Filey Brigg offers a unique mix of natural wonder and wildlife, and is named 24th on the list.

This stretch of land juts dramatically into the North Sea, its rocky ledges filled with marine life and rock pools begging to be explored.

Along the beach, a sculpture trail adds an artistic flair to your walk, while colourful chalets give the area a nostalgic, postcard-perfect feel.

It’s quieter than many of Yorkshire’s more famous beaches, making it an ideal destination for peaceful summer getaways.

Stay nearby in the artistic market town of Malton at The Talbot, a historic coaching inn with modern comforts.

Condé Nast Traveller said: "The best part of this sandy beach is the wildlife. Trek out to the north and find Filey Brigg: a stretch of stony land that protrudes out into the ocean, and is teeming with rock pools to explore.

"There's also the sculpture trail along the beach, and a series of colourful chalets dotted along the coastline that are available to rent - the ideal place to stay for a peaceful summer holiday by the sea."

Whitley Bay, Tyneside

Once a bustling Victorian resort, Whitley Bay has evolved into a beloved North East gem that still retains its timeless seaside charm.

The wide, sandy beach is perfect for family outings, wild swimming, or windswept walks, with the iconic St Mary’s Lighthouse adding to the coastal magic.

Though the hotel scene is modest, there are charming Airbnb options just a short walk from the beach – perfect for a laid-back escape.

It’s easy to see why this beach continues to win hearts, generation after generation.

Condé Nast Traveller said: "This stunning beach front was originally a famous Victorian holiday resort, complete with a traditional funfair and bathing area.

"Now, it is still a popular holiday destination for locals, who come here to swim in the clean, safe waters."

South Bay, Scarborough, North Yorkshire

A beach steeped in history and tradition, South Bay in Scarborough was once one of the world’s original spa destinations.

Its golden sands are framed by seaside amusements, ice cream parlours, and the imposing ruins of the 11th-century Scarborough Castle.

Airbnb offers a handful of quaint seaside homes, just steps from the shore.

Condé Nast Traveller said: "Legend has it that Scarborough, in North Yorkshire, was one of the world's original spas: pilgrims from as early as 1611 would come from miles around to bathe in the sea, the waters of which were thought to have peculiar healing properties.

"Today, the beach is just as picturesque as ever, with plenty of attractions to keep you occupied. Be sure to explore the 11th-century ruins of Scarborough Castle, which separates South Bay from its similarly stunning sibling, North Bay."
