A County Durham museum has been named the most visited attraction in the North East.
Beamish, The Living Museum of the North, is celebrating an increase in visitor numbers to 838,632 last year, making it the most visited attraction in the North East.
A new report from the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions (ALVA), released during English Tourism Week, showed that the award-winning open air museum saw an above-average five per cent rise in visitor numbers in 2024.
Rhiannon Hiles, Beamish's chief executive said: "We are absolutely delighted to have welcomed 838,632 visitors to Beamish last year.
“We are an independent museum and attraction and this continuing increase in visitor numbers, making us the most visited attraction in the North East, is testament to the work of our fantastic staff and volunteers, who provide a first-class experience at the museum.
“We celebrated the completion of our 1950s Town last year along with the opening of our Georgian Drovers Tavern and pottery, supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, and are working on exciting plans for the future.
“We are incredibly proud to be part of our amazing North East, contributing to the economy and communities, and working with our partners to showcase the region as an fantastic place to live, work, visit and study in.
“We’re looking forward to continuing to welcome visitors from across the region, country and the world to experience Beamish, and have a busy programme of events planned for this year."
