POLICE have taken action after an illegal trap and pony race took place into oncoming traffic in a North Yorkshire road.
Officers from North Yorkshire Police were made aware of the incident in the early hours of this morning (Sunday) in the A168 at Dishforth – a road which runs alongside the A1(M).

A spokesperson for the force said: “Early hours of this morning police found themselves in a difficult situation when approximately 80-90 members of travelling community attended A168 outside Rainton to conduct illegal trap and pony races.
“The behaviour of those involved placed both themselves and other road users at significant risk as racing was directed into oncoming traffic.”
Whilst the police were unable to stop the race completely, they did obtain enough evidence to prosecute people involved for a number of driving offences.
They added: “One car was seized for insurance offences and it's driver reported to summons for careless driving.
“Further convictions for the other drivers involved will follow in due course.
“Thank you for your patience and understanding if you were caught up in this incident at the time.”
