A man has been reported for careless driving after a woman was taken to hospital following a crash in County Durham over the weekend.

Police, fire, and ambulance crews were called to the A688 at Metal Bridge on Sunday (March 9) after a two-vehicle collision at around 2pm. 

During the incident, one of the vehicles flipped over, with fire crews confirming that one person was left trapped in one of the vehicles.

Firefighters from the County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service (CDDFRS) used cutting equipment and small tools to free the person before handing them over to the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS). 

They were then taken to the University Hospital of North Durham.

On Monday (March 10), Durham Constabulary confirmed that a man in his 30s was reported for careless driving following the incident.

A spokesperson for the police force said: "Police were called just after 2pm yesterday to reports of a two-vehicle collision on the A688, Thinford Lane at Metal Bridge.

"A woman was taken to hospital while the other driver, a man in his 30s has been reported for careless driving."

A section of the road between the Thinford Roundabout and A177 Roundabout was closed during the incident.

A County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called at 2.06pm on Sunday to reports of a road traffic collision with a person trapped. 

“Our first appliance arrived at the scene at 2.30pm. We sent three in total and one senior officer. One person was trapped and we extricated them using cutting equipment and small tools.

A spokesperson for NEAS added: "We are called to a two-vehicle traffic incident on the A668, Thinford Lane at Metal Bridge, Durham, at 2pm this afternoon. 

“We dispatched a double crewed ambulance, a clinical team leader and one vehicle from our Hazardous Area Response Team. 

“One patient was transported to University Hospital of North Durham."
