With voting for The Northern Echo’s Best Hairdresser or Barber in Darlington or County Durham competition now well and truly open, your favourite salon needs your support!

Every day over the next ten days, we will be featuring one of our top ten finalists, chosen by our readers.

Today The Northern Echo speaks to Calum Paul from Paul James Hairdressing, based in Fishburn, who have made the top 10.

"It would mean the world to win," Mr Paul, 32, said.

"For a little hair salon from a little village to win, it would put the village on the map!"

Mr Paul opened the salon with Gary James, who both worked in salons elsewhere previously - Paul in Middlesbrough and James in Durham.

"We love meeting clients and making a difficult day better," he said.

"A lot of people say it's like a tonic, coming here.

"They come in feeling down but leave feeling better."

The salon has recently celebrated its 10th anniversary and does more than just cut and style hair for its clients, having pivoted to developing and selling its own hair care products over the pandemic.

Not only that, but the venue also produces its own strip lashes "even though we're not a beauty salon".

"We really enjoy the business side of things," he said.

"We're really forward thinking."

It's reflected in reviews of the salon online, with a five-star rating on Facebook. One customer, Zoe Carr, said: "Had my first appointment, and loved it! Such a warm welcoming environment, gave great tips and did an amazing job!

"Will 100 per cent be going back!"

The Northern Echo editor Gavin Foster said: "The Best Hairdresser or Barber competition gives us an opportunity to shine a spotlight on some great businesses across the region.

"We know we have some fantastic salons out there across Darlington and County Durham.

"Here at The Northern Echo, we want to recognise and celebrate the fabulous work of beauty salons across our cities, towns and villages, and the people behind them who often work their hardest to make people look incredible.

"That's why we’re delighted to launch our search for the best hairdresser or barber to help put them on the map and celebrate all that they do.

"Nominations are open now and we’ll be bringing you updates on those shortlisted in our competition – so keep an eye out to see if your favourite is featured and for more information on how to vote."

Voting for Best Hairdresser closes on March 1 when totals will be tallied and the winner will be crowned.
