The former headquarters of Hambleton District Council in Northallerton are on the market.
The Civic Centre, located on Stonecross in Northallerton was built in 1981 and served as the council's headquarters. Now, Align Chartered Surveyors is inviting offers for the site.
Hambleton District Council was absorbed by North Yorkshire Council when the two-tier authority system was scrapped in the region and the council says selling the building will help reduce costs and free up resources.
North Yorkshire Council’s corporate director of resources, Gary Fielding, said: “Stonecross Civic Centre in Northallerton was put up for sale as part of a wider plan to make better use of our buildings.
“Following local government re-organisation and the launch of North Yorkshire Council, we inherited a large number of properties including several offices in Northallerton that were no longer fully used.
“Services previously based at Stonecross will be moved to other council-owned buildings in Northallerton to make better use of the existing space. The sale will also allow the site to be repurposed for a more beneficial use.”
The building, which spans three floors, is shaped like a plus sign, comprising five rectangular sections slightly off-centre with a central atrium topped with a square pyramid roof.
It features seven ground-floor entrances, likely built with a steel or concrete frame, and external walls constructed of red brick and glazing.
The windows, typical of their era, are believed to be either aluminium or steel-framed, generally rectangular, with bay windows at each staircase.
The site, estimated to be around two acres, includes approximately 140 white-lined tarmacadam car parking spaces.
Estate agents note that the boundaries mentioned are based on the desired demised area, and the whole title is not available; only part is.
They advise interested parties to conduct their own assessment of the title.
The property is sold subject to all existing wayleaves, easements, rights of way, covenants and restrictions.
Prospective buyers are encouraged to make a thorough assessment of these aspects before proceeding.
Align Chartered Surveyors has been unable to obtain information regarding the services available on the site.
