A bus driver was left covered in glass after a rolling pin was thrown through his cab window.
The 108/109 service through Willington, County Durham had to be withdrawn for the rest of the night with about £500 of damage to the bus.
Weardale Travel has said it will consider rerouting its service for the safety of its drivers and passengers if it was to happen again.
It happened on the Hall Lane Estate on Saturday (February 1) afternoon, near Parkside Academy.
A police investigation is underway.
Stu Gray, Bus Service Manager at Weardale Travel, said: “The driver wasn’t injured thankfully. He was covered in glass but fortunately had no cuts.
“We got the bus back onto the road but at some cost to ourselves. The driver is back to work but he was quite shaken.
“It’s lucky it wasn’t summer, and the driver didn’t have the window open or it’d have hit him on the head.
“There was no bus for the rest of Saturday evening, for which we apologise for the inconvenience.
“It’s just mindless.
“When you damage a bus its not just breaking the window, it’s inconveniencing people waiting, we are just a little family firm – we can’t absorb costs like a big company can.
“If it happens again we will have to take steps to reroute the bus.”
The driver was back out on the service on Monday morning.
The 108/109 runs from Bishop Auckland through Crook and Willington to Oakenshaw.
A Durham Police spokesperson said: “Police were made aware of reports of damage to a bus on Saturday (February 1) in Willington.

“It is believed the suspect threw an object at the bus causing a window to smash.
“Thankfully, nobody is believed to have been injured.
“Officers have launched an investigation into the incident and enquiries are ongoing.”
