The much-anticipated 28 Years Later film is set to be released in the UK this summer, but did you know some of it was filmed right here in the North East?
The first in a new trilogy which follows on from the 28 Days Later franchise will feature the likes of Killing Eve’s Jodie Comer, rumoured James Bond star Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Back to Black actor Jack O'Connell and the legendary Ralph Fiennes (to name a few).
But last summer, many locals saw 28 Years Later being filmed around Northumberland and they have now revealed exactly where production was spotted.
It comes as fans posted in the Reddit group r/Northumberland to discuss the newly released trailer as Danny Boyle, Alex Garland and Cillian Murphy reunited once more.
Where was 28 Years Later filmed in the North East?
Let’s take a look at where some of the scenes for horror movie were filmed in the county, as documented by residents.
One person wrote: “There was filming at Rothbury, Planky Mill, Holy Island, Bellingham, and Kielder.
“They were filming at Chopwell woods too, but i think thats for the next movie (28 Years Later Part II).”
They added: “Rare to have something so big so local”.

Someone replied: “I saw a big setup for filming at Whittingham Station on the A697, and a few days earlier got stopped from driving up the Ingram Valley by a security guard, walking up Hedgehope later I saw the huge lorries and trailers driving down the valley. I thought they might have been filming at Linhope Spout?”
This Reddit profile revealed: “Some filming took place in Rothbury. The scene at 1:52 is on Blaeberry Hill.”
Other mentions were Kielder Forest and at Knowesgate.
Reports also suggest Briarwood Banks was used as a filming location.

When will 28 Years Later be released in the UK?
After a long time waiting, fans will be delighted to know 28 Years Later will be released in the UK on June 20.
The second film in the new franchise, 28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple, is scheduled to be released on January 16, 2026.
