A “charming” Darlington coffee shop that “never disappoints” has taken the top spot in The Northern Echo’s Best Coffee Shop competition.

Deli-cious, which serves a mixture of British and Greek food from its home on High Row, was crowned the winner on Thursday (December 19), beating nine other finalists chosen by readers.

Owner Maria Zaimaki was thrilled to discover the news, saying it has been a “good year” for the coffee shop after also scooping the Independent Business of the Year at the Darlington Stronger Communities Awards.

Maria - who is originally from Greece - told The Northern Echo: “It means a lot. We have been here for three years on December 15 and we’re celebrating that too at the minute - we have balloons up and treats for customers.”

Deli-cious has fast become a popular spot in town after opening in 2021, serving up breakfast, lunch, and a mixture of sweet treats.

The venue is a family affair too - with Maria’s husband and children all working in the café alongside seven other members of staff.

She continued: “We have a good combination here. It’s good coffee, food, and we have nice friendly staff. So I think we have it all. All the staff try their best - this is very exciting.”

Deli-cious, which bakes its own cakes and is praised for its popular baklava, holds a 4.2 star rating on Google Reviews.

One happy customer said: “This café never disappoints, I had the baklava and it was amazing, especially with cinnamon sprinkled vanilla ice cream, just wonderful. And then had the same again today and it's still a delight!”

Deli-cious is open from 9am until 5pm on weekdays, until 9pm on Fridays and Saturdays, and until 4pm on Sunday.
