Take in scenic North Yorks Moors on special seasonal steam train trips

A heritage rail line is offering passengers the chance to blow off the post-Christmas cobwebs on seasonal steam runs over scenic moorland.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway’s (NYMR) Whitby Winter Excursions depart daily from Pickering on return trips to the seaside town.

Passengers are promised a memorable round trip to Whitby, complete with views of frosty landscapes amid the timeless beauty of heritage steam travel.

The special services will run daily from Friday, December 27 to Sunday, January 5, 2025.

(Image: NYMR/John Hunt) Departing from Pickering at 11.10am, but at 10.15am on both Sundays, the journey time is approximately an hour and 45 minutes, leaving passengers with more than an hour and a half to explore the seaside delights of Whitby in winter.

The return journey will depart Whitby at 2.30pm, with arrival back in Pickering by about 4.15pm.

(Image: NYMR/John Hunt) Described as, “enchanting steam-hauled journeys”, they aim to offer a unique 36-mile round-trip showcasing the beauty of the North Yorks Moors, from the comfort of heritage carriages.

The excursions are said to be perfect for post-Christmas adventures, providing a way to escape the indoors and create cherished memories

Visitors will have the opportunity to explore much of what Whitby has to offer, including its charming harbour, or simply experience the seasonal atmosphere of the seaside town, while sampling traditional fish and chip lunches from one of the town’s many friers.

Tickets for the Winter Whitby Excursions are selling quickly, so would be passengers are urged to pre-book or risk missing being part of the magical journey.

Return visits using an unlimited annual pass are valid for these special services, but must be booked online using holders’ unique personal code.

By paying the standard £49.50 annual charge, visitors have 12 months’ free to hop on and off the NYMR’s standard Red, Blue, and Yellow services.
