James May has responded to claims that Top Gear was “controversial”.
The 61-year-old worked alongside Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond on the BBC show before banding together once more for Prime Video’s The Grand Tour.
After working together for 22 years, the trio called in quits professionally in July with the dissolving of their production company which made the shows, W. Chump and Sons.
One last Grand Tour special aired back in September documenting trips to Zimbabwe and Botswana but now two of the members have reunited.
Speaking to the Radio Times last week, James May defended Top Gear from criticism after being asked whether the series was controversial.
"Top Gear was very much of its time,” he said.
“Social attitudes towards the car have changed quite a bit. These days, it’s become more political.
"It was just painfully honest. It was a view of the world, distorted through the eyes of people who were unreasonably concerned about cars."
