South Hetton fire: Firefighters remain at scene tonight

Plumes of thick black smoke could be seen billowing into the sky in South Hetton tonight (November 18) from a fire in an abandoned building.

Three fire engines from across the region were sent in to tackle the flames just after 5pm which were pictured by locals.

The fire in South Hetton. (Image: KAY LOUISE HOPE) Over 180 homes in the DH6 postcode area also saw their power turned off due to the fire - but many homes are understood to now have it back.

Firefighters are still at the scene this evening but the exact location and cause of the fire has not yet been revealed.

A County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "At 17.09 this evening County Durham and Darlington attended a large fire in a disused building in the South Hetton area.

"Three appliances from Peterlee and Seaham were in attendance tackling the fire as well a Bulk Water Carrier. Crews remain on scene damping the fire down.

"We advise that residence close by keep their windows closed while there is smoke in the area."
