The Northern Echo has now launched its Best Chippy 2024 competition - and your favourite chippy needs your support!

Voting is now open - but while we wait to find out who will be crowned as the best chippy for 2024, we're featuring one of the finalists every day for the next ten days.

Today it is Barton's Fish and Chips, in 26A Longfield Road, Darlington.

Owner Trudy Spence has ran the shop since 2002 - but only converted it to a fish and chip shop in 2019.

She said: "We ran it as a shop for a lot of years. It was a fish shop years ago but it took us a long time to get a licence sorted for the change of use.

"We decided to just go for it one night – and we started off really well but then Covid hit and it was really hard. We did deliveries and collections though, and our customers got us through. They are really fantastic in supporting us.

On why they were nominated, Trudy said: “I think it’s just the way we cook our fish, and we are all really friendly. We have a lot of regular customers, we know their orders and a lot of their life stories too."
