A North East pub with “smart but simple rooms” decorated with white linen and tartan “accents” has been featured among not only the UK’s best places to stay for a short break, but the most affordable too.

The Lindisfarne Inn located in Northumberland was praised by The Times for being one of the cheapest places visitors can make the most of when exploring the area, including some of the county's magnificent “moody” beaches.

Plus, it’s dog-friendly and near the iconic Holy Island of Lindisfarne.

The publisher commented on its latest travel guide: “UK breaks are so expensive! That’s the refrain of British holidaymakers each summer, as they browse luxury beach hotels and remote rentals in the most sought-after areas of the country. But the budget British hideaway still exists — you just have to know where to find it.

“An affordable stay here can look wildly different: the good old British pub, say, converted with stylish hotel rooms upstairs and great grub downstairs. A rustic campsite or hip glampsite surrounded by natural beauty, where kids can join in activities and grown-ups can enjoy peaceful nights by the campfire. Log cabins and shepherd’s huts can add a bit of back-to-nature magic while saving you money on a traditional hotel room.”

Why is The Lindisfarne Inn among UK’s best affordable short breaks?

The Times explained: “Northumberland, the wild stretch of historic coast and walking trails north of Newcastle, is having a moment.

“You don’t come here for the sunshine — instead, think blustery walks along moody beaches or Hadrian’s Wall before retreating to a cosy base with a roaring fire.

“The dog-friendly Lindisfarne Inn is handy for the county’s highlights, from Holy Island with its 12th-century ruins and dolphins to Bamburgh with its showstopping castle, plus boat trips to the Farne Islands, home to puffins.

“Smart but simple rooms with white linen and tartan accents are a calm base for walkers, with a Northumberland brekkie thrown in.”

On Tripadvisor, The Lindisfarne Inn has a rating of 4/5 out of 1,277 reviews.
