Northern Echo readers have been debating where the best parmo can be found.

The traditional dish of breaded chicken or pork topped with a white Béchamel sauce and cheddar cheese, originated in the Teesside area of England.

Enthusiastic eaters have recommended a host of locations, from Middlesbrough to Darlington and beyond.

An anticipated answer seemed to be Merlin Billingham in Stockton, with three residents, Michael Margetts, Leigh Cormack, and Kaz Dunn lauding it as the best place for this local creation.

Locals also pointed to some lesser-known spots for a tasty parmo.

Andrew Nancy Dowd said: "Brouz at Stockton".

Lisa Michelle Ward suggested: "Rinty’s Kitchen At The Sir Thomas Brown".

A surprise contender was Marie Barry's kitchen, with the proud cook proclaiming: "My kitchen", reminding us that home can often be the heart of the best cooking.

Following suit, Ian Bussey simply said: "homemade".

In Darlington, Crusty's Pizzeria came up as the praised parmo spot with Helen Appleby and Jason Corrigan singing its praises.

Helen Appleby stated: "Crustys Pizzeria Darlington".

Meanwhile, Emilie Lochner passionately repeated: "The Reunion Bar and Restaurant".

While most locals raved about parmo from various eateries, there were a few dissenting voices.

Carl Bennett was vocal about his distaste, stating: "Nowhere, they look like congealed sick."

Al Turner added, "The bin is the best place", while Rob Webster simply said: "All crap".

Nevertheless, it seems that the most heated debate might not be where to get the best parmo, but what truly makes it one.

Chris Walker said: "Pork and non-halal or it ain't a parmo", shedding a different light on the cheesy discussion.
