A man has appeared in court charged with attempted murder after a woman suffered multiple stab wounds.

David Fletcher, who is 61, is accused of attacking a woman in her 30s in the Gilesgate area of Durham.

Emergency services were called to Churchill Square just before 8pm on Thursday, May 2.

Fletcher, of Dean Road, South Shields, appeared before magistrates sitting at Newton Aycliffe on Saturday.

He is also charged with possession of a bladed article in a public place and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

He has been remanded into custody and is due to appear at Teesside Crown Court on Monday June 3.
