The bomb squad carried out a controlled explosion on a North East beach yesterday (Saturday, April 20) after a bottle containing a suspected hazardous substance was found.

Emergency services were alerted to the suspected item in Seaton Carew, near Hartlepool, during the afternoon. 

Royal Logistic Corps Bomb Disposal unit was called in and Seaton Carew beach was cleared before a "safe and controlled explosion" was carried out.

Cleveland Police posted on X: "The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) attended Seaton Carew beach this afternoon (Saturday) to carry out a safe and controlled explosion of a suspected hazardous substance inside a bottle.

"Thank you for your patience and co-operation while the substance was safely disposed of."

The Northern Echo: It is not clear if the bottle was found on the beach or taken there for safe disposal.
