County Durham is filled with a multitude of hidden parks, landmarks and coastal spots you may never have heard of - here are five hidden gems you could visit for a day out this weekend.

When you think of a sight to see in the North East, many popular landmarks and scenic views come to mind.

Perhaps you think of the Angel of the North, Durham Cathedral or Penshaw Monument, but there are many more hidden gems across the region.

But, there are many areas and landmarks you may never have heard of before - making them a hidden gem you can discover.

As we head towards summer and the weather picks up, we've compiled a list of five hidden gems in County Durham for you to visit.

Hardwick Park, Sedgefield

Set beside the stunning Hardwick Hall, Hardwick Park is home to a collective of historical monuments including the Temple of Minerva which you can spot as you stroll around Serpentine Lake.

To park up, take a left as you head up to Sedgefield on the A177 and you'll find the car park beside the visitor centre.

Low Barns Nature Reserve and Visitor Centre, Bishop Auckland

A part of the Durham Wildlife Trust, Low Barnes is described as one of the county's most important wildlife sites and has its own visitor site and coffee shop.

The 47-hectare reserve is noted to have grazing animals and plenty of animals you can spot as you peruse the walking trails.

Make sure to bring a picnic too - as there are areas to sit down and have a food feast.

Horden Beach, Peterlee

Whilst the beaches of Seaham, further up the coast, may be popular with tourists, Horden's beach is way more secluded and offers the same stunning views of the North Sea.

Drive down Cotsford Lane and you'll come to Lime Kiln Gill car park which provides access to the beach itself.

Furthermore, there are no restrictions on dogs across all County Durham beaches this summer meaning you can take your loyal pooch for a stroll too.
