Seventeen people have been taken to hospital after a minibus carrying South Shields FC fans overturned.

National Highways confirmed the small coach had overturned on the A1 in the Darrington area of West Yorkshire at about 7pm last night.

It came as Shields fans were travelling home from a 3-2 defeat against Tamworth in the National League North.

In a statement on Facebook, the club said: “Our thoughts go out to the supporters involved in a crash on the way home from today’s game.

“At this moment of time we have no further details, however, we hope everyone is safe and recovering.”

A Yorkshire Ambulance Service spokesperson confirmed to the Echo 17 people had been taken to different hospitals in the area.

The Northbound carriageway was closed until about 3am on Sunday (April 14) morning.
