Five people have been treated at the scene of a crash on the A1(M) on Saturday (April 13) afternoon - which saw a car overturn on the stretch of road. 

Emergency services were called to the A-road at about 4.25pm, following reports of a crash near junction 63 Chester-le-Street. 

After arriving on the scene, police, paramedics and firefighters were met with an overturned car. 

It's not known at this time how many vehicles were involved in the collision - but the North East Ambulance Service has confirmed that five people were treated at the scene of the incident.

Two people were then taken to hospital via road ambulance, while three further people took themselves to hospital. 

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called to reports of a road traffic collision on the A1 around the Chester-le-Street area at 4.25pm this afternoon (13 April).

"We dispatched two ambulance crews and a clinical team leader, who assessed five patients on scene. Two patients have been taken to hospital by ambulance and three patients have made their own way to hospital."
