Suspected human remains have been found near the River Wear in Sunderland, police have confirmed.
Just before midday cops were called to the Fish Quay, just behind Low Street in Sunderland where the discovery had been made.
Officers remained at the scene throughout the afternoon as inquiries got underway.
Police are yet to confirm whether the remains are human, or if they are treating the incident as suspicious.
A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly before 12pm today (Friday), we received a report of suspected human remains having been discovered on the Fish Quay, behind Low Street in Sunderland.
“Emergency services are currently at the scene.”
