Poshest places in the North East chosen by you

Barnard Castle

Barnard Castle in County Durham was recommended by a handful of readers – it was also named one of the UK’s top 100 villages and towns in 2023 by Which?

The town scored 72 overall, thanks to its historic attractions, numerous shops and restaurants.

It also received four out of five stars for scenery and attractiveness, alongside food and drink.

Wynyard

Wynyard located near Stockton-on-Tees was also given the spotlight by residents - one person said they recently “went round on the bus the other day” to visit, while others replied to the comment saying they agreed.

Just one of the places to explore near this “posh” village is Wynyard Hall, an estate “forged” in history.

As well as being an exclusive wedding venue, it also hosts “plate dining experiences, restful breaks and botanical escapes.”

Commenting on the gardens, the Wynyard Hall website reads: “Botanics have played a pivotal role in the history of Wynyard and as custodians of this estate, we continue to build that legacy. Explore our iconic gardens and arboretum set within the 120 acre private grounds.”

Darras Hall

Some locals claimed Darras Hall was the “poshest” place to live in the North East.

One particular comment said: “there or Wynard would be my choice of location for sure but my bank account doesn't approve.”

A luxury home which had undergone “substantial refurbishment” within the Darras Hall Estate was among Rightmove’s most viewed properties of 2023 in the UK, which was on the market for offers over £3,950,000.

Just some of its standout features include a triple car garage, its own cinema room and gym, and another independent flat above the home.

The family home was built around 12 years ago and has six bedrooms and eight bathrooms.

Staindrop

Another “posh” place to live which received some attention by readers was Staindrop.

The County Durham village was also recently revealed among the top “unexpected” holiday destinations in England, according to a new study.

Staindrop is “not usually on most tourists’ wishlists” but there are plenty of reasons why it’s “on the map”, according to Schofields Insurance.

It was selected as a top location for holidaymakers due to its “outstanding” crime rates and proximity to a range of local tourist attractions.

Schofields explained: “Staindrop in County Durham is not usually on most tourists’ wishlists, but its proximity to the North Pennines Area of Natural Beauty as well as other popular tourist attractions including Raby Castle, deer park and its bespoke Plotters’ Forest adventure playground, and the Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle really put Staindrop on the map.

“You could easily spend an entire trip exploring this area of the North East, whether you’re more interested in the history, including Beamish, the world famous open air museum just 30 miles away, or the outdoors at Hamsterley Forest with its Gruffalo trail.”

Brancepeth

Among the comments suggesting it was one of the “poshest” places, one person added that Brancepeth is also a “beautiful village” on the Northern Echo Facebook page.
