A charity concert has been planned later this month to help support a 15-year-old schoolboy who was paralysed during a life-changing incident at home, as a fundraising page set up for him reaches over £25,000.

On December 9 last year, Ripon Grammar student Alan Nowicki was paralysed from the waist down after an accident at home in Ripon.

During the incident, the teenager fell from a pull bar, and as the bar fell from the door frame, he hit his head on the floor.

After the accident, Alan warned his parents that he couldn't feel his legs - with the family left waiting two hours for the ambulance to take the 15-year-old to Leeds General Infirmary.

It was at the hospital that he received the life-changing news - he had suffered a spinal fracture with dislocation and spent the next 11 days in hospital.

In the five months that have passed, Alan has spent further time in hospital, as well as time in his native Poland for rehabilitation, where the costs were significantly less than in the UK.

Now back in the UK, Alan is recovering well at home, according to his mum Kamila, with a fundraiser that was set up shortly after the accident has reached over £25,000, which will go towards his ongoing treatment.

His mum Kamila said: "Alan has settled back home very well. We’re still waiting for a decision regarding disability allowance benefit for Alan.

"Any money raised in future will go towards Alan’s continuous rehabilitation in private clinics in Leeds and Sheffield, and I’m hoping to find Alan a nice warm swimming pool so he can continue his hydrotherapy too."

She added: "Money has also been spent on the nine-week rehab stay, flights, wheelchair and other rehabilitation equipment that I’ve bought for home use. I don’t have a top figure in mind really, every little helps.

"Alan is doing well, he’s super strong and fit, and positive thinking throughout. There is no change in terms of the paralysis but he has regained feeling further down on his tummy, so fingers crossed."

Despite the barriers put in Alan's way, his main goal is to achieve his dream of becoming a Royal Air Force pilot; something that has struck a chord with a Ripon cadet, who has now organised a fundraiser to try and garner more donations to Alan's cause.

Daniel McClean, 17, is organising the event to take place next week, with Daniel also sharing a dream to be in the RAF one day.

Before the accident, Alan was in the RAF Air Cadets, with Daniel sympathising with Alan's challenges he now faces.

Daniel said: "I don’t know Alan personally but when I read about his accident, I couldn't just sit and do nothing. It struck me that I or anyone could be in that situation.

"I have spoken with Alan’s family and had confirmation that they are coming to the concert. They are very grateful we are doing this."

During the fundraising concert, which will be staged at Ripon Grammar School on April 18 from 7.30pm-10pm, Daniel hopes to raise around £1000 for Alan's cause.

The event will only be open to students of Ripon Grammar School and their families, and there is no ticket fee but volunteers will have donation buckets at the event.

At the event, there will be three student bands playing the concert, with Mr McClean taking part as a drummer for band Yellow Number 5.
