Two people have been taken to hospital following a crash involving two vehicles along a country road near the A66 this morning.

Emergency services were called to Durham Lane, a road running south of the A66 near Elton just before 9am this morning (April 8) following reports of a crash.

The road was swiftly closed by police who wrote on social media that the road "will remain closed for a while".

It has not yet been re-opened.

Two vehicles were involved, and it has now been revealed that two people have been taken to hospital.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called to a two vehicle road traffic collision on Durham Lane, Stockton at at 8.57 this morning.

"We dispatched two double crewed ambulance and were supported by our colleagues at Great North Air Ambulance.

"One patient was taken to North Tees Hospital and another was taken to James Cook Hospital, both by road."

The Great North Air Ambulance was also called to the scene to assist.

A spokesperson said: "Our critical care team was activated at 9.16am to reports of a road traffic collision at 9.16am on Durham Lane near the A66.

"We had a doctor and paramedic on board our aircraft and they arrived on scene at 9.22am.

"Our team worked alongside the North East Ambulance Service to assess and treat two patients.

"Both patients were taken to hospital by the North East Ambulance Service road crew."

Cleveland Police has been contacted for more information.
