A North Yorkshire Great British Bake Off star is returning to his roots to promote his home town as a top food and travel destination.

David Atherton, who won the smash hit series in 2019 will now promote Route YC (Yorkshire Coast) - described as the "ultimate road trip" in an effort to show the area is a great destination for breaks and day trips.

The TV star, who is originally from Ruswarp near Whitby, is encouraging tourists to visit the region to "create their own culinary and dog-friendly adventure" and has been trying out local food spots with his 3-year-old rescue pup, Kai.

“I love my hometown of Whitby and take every opportunity to visit my family,” he said.

“Route YC is a true celebration of the best the Yorkshire coastline has to offer and has given me the chance to explore a new range of places to eat and drink that I hadn’t tried before.

“There are so many great places to explore along the Yorkshire Coast, but I was surprised how many serve amazing local food and drink and are dog-friendly.”

Destinations picked out by the YC include Spurn Point, Whitby, the beaches of Hornsea and Bridlington and everything in between, including Scarborough, Filey and Withernsea.

David added: “However you like to travel, whether it's walking, cycling, or even outdoor swimming, you’ll find loads of places to re-energise for the next leg of your trip. I can’t wait to get back and explore another Route YC adventure.”
