Restrictions that ban dogs from being walked along beaches across the region are due to come into force in the next few weeks - here's a full list of beaches where dogs will be banned.

Summer is just around the corner, meaning restrictions that ban dogs from beaches across the North East will come into play as dog owners could be hit with fines.

Beaches from Whitley Bay down to Saltburn have 'dog-free' zones for the summer period from May 1 until the end of September each year.

The strict rules, which are imposed at certain locations, are part of a power that councils can decide to introduce in order to prevent dogs from using spaces - and come with a £1,000 fine.

Here's the full list:

Redcar and Cleveland

According to information from the council, in Redcar, the ban extends from The Regent cinema to where The Esplanade meets Graffenberg Street.

The same can be said for Saltburn, where dogs are not permitted on the beach between Hazelgrove and Saltburn Pier.

Hartlepool

Two beaches in Hartlepool will see dogs banned from May 1.

These are:

  • The Headland (Block Sands and Fish Sands)
  • Seaton Carew (from the Norton Hotel to the Coach Park)

County Durham

There are no orders in place across County Durham's beaches preventing dog owners from using them for walking and exercising.

Sunderland

In Sunderland, dogs will not be permitted on Seaburn Beach and Roker Beach. 

South Tyneside

In South Tyneside, dogs are not permitted on Sandhaven Beach between 8am and 6pm.

They are however allowed on Littlehaven Beach (next to Sandhaven) and Marsden Beach throughout the year. 

North Tyneside

Restrictions will see four beaches closed off to dogs this summer.

They are:

  • Whitley Bay (south)
  • Cullercoats Bay 
  • King Edwards 
  • Tynemouth Longsands (south)

Northumberland

In Northumberland, Newbiggin-by-the-Sea and Blyth Beach cannot be used by dogs during the restriction period.

Scarborough and Whitby

In North Yorkshire, Scarborough Borough Council say the main sections at Scarborough South Bay and North Bay, Whitby West Cliff, Filey and Sandsend cannot be used by dog walkers.
