A man has been hospitalised after being belted over the head with a brick by a woman in Newcastle.

Police are appealing for witnesses after the report of an assault on Sceptre Place in the Elswick area.

The incident happened at about 7.50pm on March 21.

The victim was walking along when he met a group of people standing in his path.

When the man in his 40s tried to get past them he says that a woman struck him in the back of the head with a brick.

The wound he sustained needed stitches at hospital and he was later discharged.

Officers are investigating the report and are today (Thursday) appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

A spokesperson said: "It was reported that the male victim was walking on Sceptre Place in the Elswick area of the city at about 7.50pm on Thursday, March 21, when he came across a group of people blocking his path.

"When he went to get past the group, he reported that a woman struck him on the back of the head with a brick.

"The victim – aged in his 40s – sustained a wound to his head which required stitches at hospital.

"He was later discharged."
