Workers at a Darlington hospital stayed out for a night to raise money as part of the Great Tommy Sleep Out.

Staff at the Woodland Hospital stayed out in the grounds on the night of March 28.

In total 13 people took part and they have managed to raise £1,800 so far.

The Great Tommy Sleep Out is done every year to raise money for the estimated 6000 homeless veterans on our streets.

Mark Pinsent, sales and marketing manager at the hospital, explained how he had been 'blown away' by the support the team had received.

He said: "We did it in the grounds of Woodlands Hospital on the night of Thursday the 28th of March with 13 members of the Woodlands team taking part and roughing it, including myself.

"Firstly I would like to give a huge shout out to Shirley Wright who was our driving force in terms of recruiting us to the project and also organising and motivating us before and on the day.

"This is such a worthwhile cause as there shouldn’t be this issue of homelessness for those members of our communities that have served their country and also with a number of  ex forces personnel also working here we were more than willing to support the event.

"The largest sum of money we had raised prior to this event was around £1300 but we are going to smash the £2000 mark for this which is a tremendous achievement for all of those that took part.

"I myself have only worked at Woodlands for just over 4 weeks but I’ve been blown away by the support that the whole of the Woodlands team have given to charitable causes and the local community and I’m privileged to be part of such an amazing team."
