Police have confirmed that some bones found on a North East beach in recent weeks are human as enquiries into the remains continue.

Northumbria Police have attended beaches in Seaburn and Roker in recent weeks following reports that remains have been found by members of the public.

Analysis of the remains have now confirmed that some of them are human.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "We have received reports of bones or suspected body parts being found at Seaburn and Roker beaches in Sunderland over recent weeks.

"We have now confirmed that some of these are human and we are currently treating the discoveries as unexplained.
